Swans recruit Callum Sinclair hasn’t looked too far ahead to say he’ll be the Swans’ number one ruck choice in 2016, instead dedicating his first summer to earning the respect of his new teammates.

Sinclair, who arrived in a straight swap with Lewis Jetta, has eyes on filling the main ruck role left vacant by Mike Pyke at the end of the season but doesn’t want to leave anything to chance.

The 26-year-old said a strong pre-season was on the top of the priority list, for now.

“That would be ideal if I could come in and play that role but there are no guarantees,” Sinclair said.

“You need to be playing consistent footy to be given the opportunity and privilege to put on a red and white jumper.

“Hopefully it falls that way…I haven’t put too many expectations on myself for 2016. I’ve just been trying to focus on the pre-season and trying to get the best out of myself and the rest of the group.

“That my focus for the time being and I’ll reassess in the new year.”

Sinclair brings invaluable experience to the Swans’ relatively young ruck contingent.

With Pyke’s departure, Kurt Tippett becomes the most experienced on 152 career games with Sinclair next in line on 29 matches tallied over the course of his three seasons with West Coast.

A mature-age recruit, Sinclair took a couple of seasons to earn a regular spot with last season proving his most fruitful after stepping up in the absence of Nic Naitanui.

During his time in Perth, Sinclair has learned from two of the best ruckmen going around in Nic Nat and former teammate-turned ruck coach Dean Cox.

Sinclair learned plenty from who he declared as “two of the greatest ruckman to have played the game” and is keen to impart his knowledge on the Swans’ developing ruckmen in Tippett and younger trio Toby Nankervis, Sam Naismith and Kyle Galloway.

“Nic and Dean are arguably so to be under their tutelage for three years was a massive thrill for me,” Sinclair said.

“I got a lot out of the experience and learned a great deal from them so I can’t thank them enough for not only being mentors but good mates as well.”

Recruited from Melbourne, Sinclair was selected in the 2013 Rookie Draft by the Eagles and becomes the third ruckmen to make the trip from the west after Jason Ball and Mark Seaby.
