First quarter

Jack Riewoldt booted the opening goal of the game for the Tigers. After struggling to get on the scoreboard early it took some run from Gary Rohan who burst into open space to set up the opener. Luke Parker had broken clear and was in the goal square on his own where he went on to snap the opener for the Swans. Franklin got on the board late in the quarter when he outmarked Rance to help the Swans to a six point lead at the first break. There was plenty of feeling in the first quarter with physicality throughout including a scuffle at quarter time as the sides broke to their huddle.

Gary Rohan was instrumental for the Swans throughout the first half of the match.

Second quarter

It was a dream start to the second quarter for big man Tom Derickx after failing to trouble the stats sheet in the opening term a strong mark and goal from outside 50 set the tone for the Swans. In slippery conditions the class of Gary Rohan in the air and by foot stood out. His goal from long range at the 8 minute mark extending the Swans lead out to 24 points. Riewoldt got one back for the Tigers but it was all the Swans in the second quarter with a five goal term.

Third quarter

The third term was a whrilwind affair. Richmond captain Trent Cotchin got the first goal of the half with a snap off the ground to get his team firing. Brett Deledio kicked the Tigers second in a row as they got the margin back to 20 points. A third goal from Vickery and the momentum was going all the way of the away side. A Tom Mitchell turn and snap over his head halted the flood of goals against the Swans and extended the lead back to 13 points. An astonishing long bomb from Luke Parker out of the centre saw a torpedo sail through from more than 80 metres out. Two goals from Riewoldt to finish the term saw the Tigers take a two point lead into the last quarter.
