Kurt Tippett made a telling impact in Sunday’s hard-fought win over Brisbane, kicking three big goals while shouldering the bulk of the ruck duties in the match-winning final term.

Tippett, who returned from a one match suspension, finished the Round 15 clash with 31 hit outs, 10 disposals, three marks and three goals including the Swans’ first two in the opening quarter and one in the last.

Tippett, speaking to SwansTV post-match, said finding the footy and impacting the scoreboard early was “a nice feeling”.

“It’s always good to start well, seems to always set up the rest of your afternoon,” Tippett said.

“It was good to get my hands on it up forward and then put it through. I played a lot in the ruck as well so that was a good challenge. It was just good to be out there, I was obviously disappointed to miss a week.”

Tippett’s last and best goal of the lot came after the key forward turned part-time ruckman showed his athleticism to pull in a diving mark at full stretch with 10 minutes remaining in the fourth term.

Tippett showed great composure to slot the goal following the effort and despite taking more of the ruck taps after Mike Pyke’s substitution at three-quarter-time.

In an effort to inject pace and extra run into the game, Harry Cunningham came on to replace Pyke which left the centre bounces and stoppages to rest on the very capable shoulders of Tippett and in patches Sam Reid.

“Sometimes that has to happen when Pyke is subbed out for whatever reason,” Tippett said. “It was important for us to get some clearances and get some momentum going our way early in the fourth.”

Inclusions don’t come much bigger than Tippett and Lance Franklin with the Swans’ twin towers kicking themselves into some form with their respective three goal efforts.

Tippett’s will to compete, around the ground and up forward, and Franklin’s continual work rate proved vital in the 21-point win at the Gabba.

“It’s hard to keep someone like him out of the game for the entire afternoon,” Tippett said of Franklin.

The return to form of the pair came just at the right time in the shadow of Saturday night’s blockbuster against Hawthorn at ANZ Stadium.
