Everyone at the Swans is saddened by the passing of the great Richie Benaud.

Richie had a love of all sport and particularly teams representing New South Wales or Sydney.

When the Swans emerged in Sydney in 1982, the Swans became his AFL team.

Despite living overseas for most Australian winters, he had a deep knowledge of the game and followed the fortunes of the Swans closely.

For approximately 15 years, Richie and his wonderful wife Daphne  - through close friend John Curtain - undertook to attend one game a year and speak at the Chairman's function.

Richie's annual presence at the Chairmans club became a highlight. Invariably he was interviewed by Swans tragic Mike Coward. It was a money can't buy event - the doyen of Australian cricket writers interviewing the biggest personality in world cricket.

Richie was witty, erudite and very self deprecating, all wrapped to together with a great generosity of spirit.

Our deepest condolences to Daphne, who will always be welcome to take up her seat at the SCG to watch the Swans.
