Kurt Tippett has undergone arthroscopic surgery to repair his torn medial meniscus, which he injured during Sunday’s 35-point win over the Gold Coast Suns.

The forward, who has booted 12 goals for the season, sustained the injury when he twisted his knee in the third quarter, and was subsequently subbed out of the game at three-quarter time.

Speaking to SwansTV for the HCF Injury Update, club physiotherapist Matt Cameron said Tippett would beginning his recovery from the injury tomorrow.

“He’s gone into surgery today following the public holiday yesterday and the surgeon’s had to remove part of his meniscus,” he said.

“It’s a fairly quick operation and we’re hoping for a two-to-three week recovery.

“He comes in tomorrow and we’ll get him started by reducing the swelling and getting his quads contracting and getting his movement back in his knee.

“We’re not waiting for anything to heal and it’s the removal of some torn tissue so we’ll take it from there.

“Wounds take about seven-to-ten days to heal and then depending on how he’s feeling and whether he’s able to run and so on, then he’s back into training.”

There’s positive news for midfielder Ben McGlynn, who suffered a knock to the head in the final term of Sunday’s win.

Cameron said McGlynn had recovered quickly and had experienced no lingering effects from the clash.

“He got a knock late in the game, so he didn’t come back on,” he said.

“Fortunately, he’s recovered really quickly since and he was up and about after the game and he certainly looked fine yesterday and today.”

Tom Mitchell has been ruled out of any matches this weekend after he suffered a ligament strain in his right ankle in Sunday’s reserves clash with the Suns.

The 20-year-old is expected to miss two-to-three weeks with the injury.

“Unfortunately someone fell across his leg as he landed from a marking contest and he’s twisted his ankle,” Cameron said.

“He’s actually hurt the ligament on the inside of his ankle and it’s on the same ankle that he hurt at the end of last year, which he had to have surgery on.

“He sustained no fracture to the ankle; it’s just a ligament strain on the inside, which is a little bit worse than the ligaments on the outside.

“It’s probably going to be a one-to-two or maybe three-week injury.”

Lewis Roberts-Thomson could be in the mix this weekend after battling calf soreness late last week, which saw him withdraw from the Swans reserves’ match on Sunday.

“Unfortunately he got to about 30 minutes of training last week, but got tight right at the end of that so we had to withdraw him from the game,” Cameron said.

“He’s certainly feeling pretty good now but he needs to get through training later in the week in order to be able to play.”

In other injury news, Alex Johnson will face another six-week wait before he undergoes his third knee reconstruction.

Cameron said the extra time was a precautionary measure for the young defender.

“The surgeon wants to wait a further six weeks just to ensure that there is no return of any swelling or inflammation in his knee,” he said.

“We’ve got surgery booked for then and his rehab will really start in earnest then.”
