Sydney Swans physiotherapist Matt Cameron says defender Rhyce Shaw may not recover from an abdominal strain in time for Saturday afternoon’s round three clash with North Melbourne in Hobart.

Cameron confirmed that the 31-year-old suffered a lower abdominal strain in the Swans’ 41-point win over Gold Coast last weekend, and is in doubt for this weekend’s match.

“He strained his lower abdominal muscle in the first quarter sprinting and kicking in one incident and he battled on well throughout the game, but we just got to the point where we thought it was a good idea to sub him out,” Cameron told SwansTV.

“He has pulled up pretty sore and the scans show a strain to that muscle and he is certainly in reasonable doubt for this weekend.

“He’s been slow to improve and we’re not holding great hopes for him to play this weekend, but we’ll see how he goes.”

Swans ruckman Shane Mumford will also face a test this week after sustaining a knock to the knee in the early stages of the last Saturday’s clash against the Suns at the SCG.

Cameron said whether or not Mumford would join his team mates in Tasmania would be decided following Thursday’s final training session.

“He got a knock to the knee in the first quarter and you might have noticed that he was limping a little bit occasionally when he had to jump and sprint,” he said.

“He was able to finish the game well enough, but he does have a knock to that side of the knee and we’ll just see how he goes.

“He’s improving each day so we’ll see how he trains on Thursday and we’ll make a judgement from there.”

In other injury news, Cameron said young Swan Gary Rohan had made significant ground in the past month, and could be training with the squad next month after a year on the sidelines recovering from a broken tibia.

“Gary has really come along in the last month and he’s been running harder and harder and doing more and more fitness running,” Cameron said.

“We are hoping that perhaps in a month’s time he will be able to start skills training with the team.”
