Sydney Swans physiotherapist Matt Cameron says injured defender Alex Johnson is likely to have surgery on his torn anterior cruciate ligament next week.

Cameron said Johnson, who flew home to Melbourne last night, would make a decision as to whether he will undergo a traditional reconstruction or the LARS procedure this week and would have surgery the following week.

“He sidestepped on his left knee and heard it snap straight away and scans on Sunday showed he had torn the ligament,” Cameron told SwansTV.

“Alex is going to need surgery now to either repair it artificially or reconstruct it.

“He’s just considering his options this week as to which path he’s going to take, and he’s likely to have that done next week.

“I think he’s got an open mind and his view is to go home and to discuss it with his family and he’s armed with the information so he’ll talk to his manager as well and they will come to a decision before that time.”

Cameron also confirmed that fellow Swans defenders Nick Smith and Marty Mattner should be fit to make their return this weekend after a number of months on the sidelines.

“They should be playing this week,” he said.

“They have been training now for more than a couple of weeks and things are going well so if this week goes well for them then they will be playing on the weekend.”

Swans forward Tommy Walsh, who suffered a back injury at training a fortnight ago, is also a chance to play this weekend.

“Tommy is up and running now, so he’s going to join training this week,” he said.

“If he trains well with no problems then he will be playing.”

In other injury news, Cameron confirmed that Swans recruit Kurt Tippett underwent surgery for a finger injury suffered a month ago.

The physio said given Tippett’s early season ban, it was the right time for the forward to repair his injured hand.

“He hurt his finger about a month ago and it was just grumbling along and it was just a timely matter at the moment,” he said.

“He’s not going to be playing for a period of time so we can just repair it and have his finger ready to do some skill training and get him ready for his return.”
