Veteran defender Heath Grundy is urging his teammates to stay positive despite not registering a win from the first month of the season.

The Swans 26-point loss to West Coast on Thursday night saw the Swans slump to their worst start to the season since 1993.

Grundy said there was encouraging signs during the first month of football even without a win.

“The first month has been pretty disappointing but we have to stay positive,” Grundy said post match.

“We have some young guys coming through but we still have some experience there with our core group.

“We need to get a win pretty soon otherwise it makes things pretty hard later in the year.”

Perhaps the most pleasing aspect of Thursday night’s match was the increased intensity around the contest.

Grundy said it was pleasing to see improvement in that area of the game but consistency was now needed.

“Our tackle percentage was good in the first quarter and that goes hand in hand with our pressure around the ball,” he said.

“That was an area of our game that was better in the first three quarters than the last few weeks.

“You have to do it for four quarters and we didn’t so they managed to get on top around the stoppages and get it forward.”

The Swans will now turn their focus to cross town rivals GWS Giants who they tackle in Saturday’s Sydney Derby XII.
