Sydney Swans midfielder Josh Kennedy’s season-high 38 possessions in Sunday’s 59-point win over St Kilda at the SCG was rewarded by coach John Longmire and Scott Watters with ten votes in the AFL Coaches Association Champion Player of the Year Award.

The reigning Bob Skilton medallist was at his lethal best at the SCG on Sunday as he racked up 22 contested possessions, 13 clearances, seven inside 50s and laid five tackles in the win over the Saints.

Kurt Tippett, who kicked five goals to take his season tally to 32 from nine games, was the next best Swans player with six votes, finishing even with St Kilda’s Jack Steven who was prominent through the midfield for the Saints.

Dane Rampe’s outstanding defensive efforts on Tom Lee and as a sweeper in the backline which saw him claim 12 one-percenters, landed him four votes, while Jarrad McVeigh (three votes) and Luke Parker (one) rounded out Sunday’s effort for the Swans.

Swans co-captain Kieren Jack still leads the vote count with two rounds remaining, but Geelong skipper Joel Selwood has closed to within two votes after he received ten votes in the Cats’ win over the West Coast Eagles on Saturday night.

The Jack and Selwood battle will add further spice to what is already shaping as one of this year’s biggest home-and-away fixtures when the Swans travel to Geelong’s Simonds Stadium to face the Cats in Saturday’s twilight match-up.
