Wednesday afternoon’s training session will be telling for two of the Sydney Swans’ key talls, with Lance Franklin and Kurt Tippett needing to prove their fitness ahead of Friday night’s clash with Hawthorn at ANZ Stadium.

Franklin was ruled out of last weekend’s match against the Brisbane Lions with knee soreness, while Tippett has been recovering from a cracked rib sustained in the NEAFL two weeks’ ago.

Speaking to SwansTV for the HCF Injury Update, Cameron said Franklin’s availability this weekend would depend on how he trains in the club’s main session at the SCG on Wednesday.

“Lance did fall really heavily on his knee in the Melbourne game and he had some deep and superficial bruising to structures in his knee,” Cameron said.

“The superficial things have resolved and they’re looking really good, it’s just the deeper structure that may stop him from being able to train tomorrow.

“If he’s not able to train after being out for a week and a half, then it’s going to raise the question about whether he actually can play.

“We’re not going to find out until we get him out there running and changing direction and training with the team.”

Tippett could be in line to play his first senior game since last year’s finals’ series, should he get through training this week.

Cameron said he was optimistic about Tippett’s chances following a strong session from the forward over the weekend.

“Kurt is really close,” he said.

“He had a big training session on the weekend and he moved really well and got through that with no problems.

“He had a short run yesterday, which was all that was planned of him and tomorrow he does some training with the team.

“If he gets through that, then he’s ready.”

In other injury news, the prognosis on Mike Pyke’s hamstring injury is positive, with the ruckman likely to miss just one match with a minor strain.

“He got a hammy strain in the game (against Brisbane),” Cameron said.

“It’s only a small one on the scale of hammy strains, so we’re expecting him to start running by the end of this week.

“He is a genuine chance for next week.”
