It’s all still sinking in for Jake Lloyd, who now sits with three successive senior games under his belt, including an impressive 29-disposal effort against the Brisbane Lions last weekend at the Gabba.

The Swans’ rookie out of Horsham and the North Ballarat under-18 system, hopes he can continue building and play more senior football in 2014.

“I’m still pinching myself to be travelling away with the likes of Jarrad McVeigh, Buddy Franklin and those guys,” Lloyd told SwansTV.

“It’s still a bit of a dream come true and it hasn’t really sunk in just yet.

“I’m three games in now and hopefully I get more opportunities going forward.”

After a consistent start to the year in the NEAFL, Lloyd was elevated from the Swans’ rookie list and selected in the side to take on Fremantle at the SCG in round five.

The 20-year-old started the match in the green vest, before running out in the red and white for the first time early in the final quarter in place of Brandon Jack.

Lloyd said he faced a nervous wait on the bench but did all he could to keep his head in the game.

“Starting as the sub was a little bit difficult because I just wanted to get out there as soon as I could and have an impact,” Lloyd said.

“As sub, I just tried to keep myself in the game as much as I could and when I got my opportunity to come on I just wanted to get into the game.

“You’ve just got to stay involved and talk to the guys coming on and off the bench.

“At half-time I had a run around and had a kick and just tried to stay involved in the game as much as I could, and just soaked it all up because it was my first game.”

Lloyd finished his first match with four disposals, including a perfect pass to set up Lance Franklin for a late goal.

“It was an unbelievable feeling,” Lloyd said on his pass to Franklin.

“Obviously a lot of the guys got around me after that as well, so it was a pretty special moment.

“It was good to get a few nice touches early because it helped calm the nerves a little bit.

“I pride myself on my skills and my work rate, so I back myself in to hit the target most times, so it was a good feeling.”

Lloyd’s foot skills were also on show in the Swans’ 79-point win over the Brisbane Lions at the Gabba last Saturday.

After gathering the ball on the 50 metre arc late in the final term, Lloyd steadied himself and slotted a nice goal from 40 metres on an angle, which was met by plenty of encouragement from his team mates.

“It was a good feeling,” Lloyd said about his first goal.

“I just try to go out there each week and try to play my role, and that’s the thing that I’ve got to do if I want to stay in the side.

“I wasn’t too carried away about the possessions and the goal, I just wanted to play my role for the team.

“If I can keep doing that then hopefully I can stay in the side.”

After making improvements in every game he’s played, Lloyd will again be in the mix for Friday night’s blockbuster clash with Hawthorn at ANZ Stadium.

While Lloyd hopes to be selected for his fourth senior game, the young midfielder said his goal was simply to improve one week and a time.

“For me it’s about taking things on a weekly basis,” he said.

“We’ve got training tomorrow, so it’s just about getting out on the track and continuing to improve and work on the areas I need to improve.

“I’ll just wait and see and come tomorrow I’ll hopefully get a game against Hawthorn this week, but I’ll just have to wait and see.”
