From Coach Crouch

We set out to Blacktown again this week to take on UWS in a practice match, while the rest of the competition had a week off for a state clash. While there is some merit in resting young players in their first or second year on an AFL list, we thought it was important to keep things rolling, particularly with the number of byes we have throughout the season.

After last week’s performance, we wanted to make sure we lifted our efforts in this week’s clash with UWS and it was clear from the opening bounce that we certainly were more switched on. We started the match with energy and intensity and managed to get a fast start by kicking the first goal of the match. Unfortunately, a few undisciplined free kicks allowed UWS back into the game and gave them the momentum late in the quarter.

At the first break, we challenged our players to lift the intensity and stop the undisciplined play, which they managed to do in the second term and we had a number of good passages of play where we controlled the ball, which helped us get back into the game.

The second half was another good battle. UWS’s inaccurate kicking did help us stay in the game, but we also helped our own cause by kicking truly when we moved the ball forward. In the end we managed to kick away and recorded a 13-point win, which was a good result.

We felt it was really positive to have a good hit out against quality opposition and it was a good test run for this weekend’s game when we take on UWS at the SCG, but this time for four points. The players would love for all the Swans fans to get along to the game early this week to cheer them on. It certainly helps lift their performance and, as I have said before, it also gives fans the opportunity to spot the next player knocking on the door for the seniors.

I also wanted to make a special mention about Zak Jones, who made his senior debut last week against Richmond. It’s always pleasing to see when one of our young players steps up and takes his opportunity.

Player Focus:

Each week, the Sydney Swans development coaches, Josh Francou, Jared Crouch and Nick Davis will highlight the performances of some of the Swans’ NEAFL players.

These players are those who contributed well on game day, made improvements or played a significant role for the Swans.

NEAFL Player of the Week – Tim Membrey

It was another standout performance from Tim this week. His defensive forward pressure has been good in recent weeks and he continues to hit the scoreboard with another five goals. He was rewarded for his good form last week by being named as an emergency for the seniors and has certainly put his name up again this week.

Key Stats: 12 kicks, four handballs, four marks, five goals

Shane Biggs

Shane’s form was solid once again on Saturday. He provided run and drive out of our back half and generally used the ball well by foot. He continues to find plenty of the ball with 25 disposals and was able to read the play well with some important intercepts and spoils.

Key Stats: 19 kicks, six handballs, four marks

Gary Rohan

Gary had a very good game this week. He spent the first half down back where he was able to rebound and pressure well. After half-time he was moved into the midfield where he was also able to make an impact. It was pleasing to see Gary able to play big minutes on the weekend and finish the game off strongly.

Key Stats: 15 kicks, seven handballs, four marks

Lloyd Perris

It was Lloyd’s best game for quite a few weeks. This was particularly evident in the first half where his work rate was exceptional, which enabled him to find plenty of the ball and generally use it well. The other pleasing aspect of Lloyd’s game was the defensive pressure he was able to apply, which caused turnovers which we were able to capitalise on.

Key Stats: 14 kicks, nine handballs, six marks, one goal

Daniel Robinson

Dan returned to good form on the weekend. After a couple of down weeks, particularly with the defensive side of his game, it was pleasing to see him impact the game as we know he can. He was able to manufacture some important intercepts and kicked two important goals.

Key Stats: 12 kicks, 10 handballs, seven marks, two goals

Michael Dickson

After being named best for the reserves last week, Michael had another good game. He defended well and was composed under pressure with ball in hand, making good decisions by foot. As a member of our Academy, he would be looking to force his way into the Rams side this week.

Key Stats: Eight kicks, five handballs, four marks
