THE Sydney Swans can confirm defender Alex Johnson will need to undergo a fourth knee reconstruction after he underwent a procedure this week to remove the LARS knee reconstruction he underwent in July.

Since undergoing his first knee reconstruction in early 2013, and despite exhaustive attempts to rectify the problem, Johnson has not been able to shake an infection which continues to compromise the health of the replacement anterior cruciate ligament.

Johnson initially underwent a traditional knee reconstruction, followed by two LARS procedures, which were all subsequently affected by the infection.

The 22-year-old has not played a senior AFL match since the 2012 Grand Final.

The timeframe for Alex’s next reconstruction and recovery is not yet known.

Johnson, who has played 45 AFL matches, said he was determined to play again and would do everything possible to return to the field.

“It is obviously very frustrating but I have no choice but to attack the situation with a positive attitude,” he said.

“It has been a difficult couple of years but I love football and while I understand the challenge ahead, I am determined to get back out playing.”

Sydney Swans General Manager – Football, Dean Moore, said it was an understandably difficult time for Alex, but despite the setback, he continues to maintain a positive outlook.

“Alex has had the most unfortunate time with injuries over the last two years, but his positive attitude throughout has been really remarkable,” Moore said.

“Naturally, he is disappointed about the latest setback but is determined to do everything he can to return to the field and we will support him as best we can.

“He is an incredibly strong young man and I have little doubt his positive mindset and determination will see him overcome what is a significant challenge.”
