Sydney Swans pair Jarrad McVeigh and Kieren Jack will lead the team again in 2015.

It is the third straight year they will co-captain the club after McVeigh was appointed to the role in 2011 and Jack in 2013.

McVeigh, 29, said he’s proud to lead the team onto the field again this season.

“It’s a huge honour, and something I treasure along with Kieren as well,” McVeigh said.

“To be able to lead a very good football team every week is a dream come true for me.”

The co-captains celebrate a goal during last year's preliminary final.

Over the pre-season the Swans have been trialling a number of players in the rebounding defender role after Nick Malceski’s move to the Gold Coast Suns.

While McVeigh is one of those players who could fill the role after earning All Australian honours in the position in 2013, he said the likes of Lewis Jetta, Jeremy Laidler, Dane Rampe and Gary Rohan have put up their hand to take over this season.

"We've got a number of guys who have been trialling through the pre-season and nowadays you have to play in a number of different positions," McVeigh said at Swans Fan Day.

"We've had Lewis Jetta down there and Laidler who can play there and I've been down there.

"So we've got a lot of guys who can run through there – you can't give your opposition just one thing, you've got to be able to play different areas and that's what we're trying to do."

The Swans kick off their NAB Challenge campaign this Friday against Brisbane at C.ex International Stadium in Coffs Harbour.

McVeigh will miss the opening round of the pre-season competition after suffering a minor calf injury at training but is expected to be fit to face Fremantle at Drummoyne Oval on March 15.

With pre-season running out of the way, McVeigh said the team is looking forward to getting onto the field and into matches again following Friday’s strong intra-club hit-out.

“Pre-season training is always tough, it gets harder every year, but coming off last year we really want to improve as a group and try and go one step further,” McVeigh said.

“We know there’s a long way to go to get back to that position but hopefully we can put ourselves in a good position and play well in the NAB Challenge leading into round one.”

Last year, it was Harry Cunningham and Jake Lloyd who had standout pre-seasons and went on to play 25 and 21 matches respectively, including the Grand Final.

Twelve months on, the co-captain has been impressed with the next generation coming through in particular two players who have come off the rookie list.

"A lot of the young guys have really come back in good condition,” McVeigh said.

“Dan Robinson’s probably the real standout from the playing group, he has been a really good forward for us and hopefully he can come up, Brandon Jack as well has had a great pre-season.

“A lot of the middle tier guys who have played a lot of footy – Parker and Hannebery – they look really hungry for another good year again too.”
