Young defenders Aliir Aliir and Lewis Melican are strong chances to return for the Swans’ cross-town NEAFL showdown with the UWS Giants.

Aliir and Melican have overcome respective injury concerns and, pending a trouble-free week on the training track, will be available for Saturday’s clash at Spotless Stadium.

With the green light already given to Sam Reid and Isaac Heeney, General Manager of Football Tom Harley had very little to report on the club’s minute injury list which now only consists of Lloyd Perris (knee) and Alex Johnson (knee).

So the attention turned to Aliir who injured the PCL in his knee during the opening round of the NEAFL and rookie Melican who has missed the opening four rounds of the season with a groin complaint.

Both defenders have made a full recovery, successfully completing a skills and fitness test over the weekend on top of taking part in today’s open training session at the SCG.

“Both Aliir and Lewis were close to playing last weekend, both didn’t but both should be available this week,” Harley said.

“They did some individual sessions leading into that game in a small group, about 30 minutes or so, so they’ll train fully this week and be right for selection.”

Harley was also happy to see Newman feature for the Swans’ NEAFL side on Saturday.

The first-year recruit spent about 40 minutes on the ground testing out his injury-free knee against Sydney Uni in what was his first competitive hit out since arriving at the Swans via last year’s Rookie Draft.
