An experience-laden UWS Giants proved too strong for the NEAFL Swans in Saturday’s Round 13 clash at Blacktown International Sportspark.

The Swans were sprung in the opening minutes and left behind as the Giants booted 14 goals to two in the first half, then another 16 unanswered goals after the main break, to run out big winners – 30.17 (197) to 2.2 (14).

On a miserable afternoon in which key players Toby Nankervis (seniors), Dean Towers (seniors), Craig Bird and Sam Naismith (both injured) were missing, the Swans came up against a Giants outfit loaded with AFL talent.

The Giants finished with 12 players above 20 possessions compared to the Swans’ two which revealed the visitors’ domination around the ball.

Despite hogging the possession, the Giants also out-tackled the Swans’ 55-49 which, according to development coach Marty Mattner, reflected a lack of intent which was emerged in the second half of last weekend’s loss to Sydney Uni.

“We spoke during the week about a few things and we didn’t see that in the game on Saturday which was very disappointing,” Mattner said.

“There were a couple of guys that tried to change the flow of the game and wrestle some of the momentum back, but we needed more than two we needed everyone to jump on board.

“We just didn’t play Swans football.”

Brandon Jack (23 possessions) battled hard while Nic Newman performed tried hard to withstand a flurry of repeat entries by the Gaints’ ball winners and potent forwards.

Isaac Heeney (nine touches) made a successful return to competitive football. The first-year recruit, who played five senior games before injuring his knee in Round 6 of the AFL season, was managed and finished up after half-time.

James Rose, who was one of two Swans to hit the scoreboard, also made a return from injury.

Mattner and the rest of the coaching staff will have to regroup and reassess ahead of Sunday’s Round 15 clash against Brisbane.
