Today marks the 20-year anniversary of when Tony Lockett joined the exclusive 1000 goal club.

It was during a Sunday afternoon against Fremantle in front of 10,410 fans at the SCG.

The Swans were on the end of a 17-point defeat but Lockett somehow had seven goals in him that day.

Should we be surprised?

He is the latest member of the 1000 goal club joining Jason Dunstall, Gordon Coventry, Gary Ablett and Doug Wade.

His sixth goal of the afternoon was the prized 1000th in what was then the 29-year-old’s 201st AFL game.

Lockett, who crossed over from St Kilda, was enjoying his first year with the Swans and was on the way to winning the Club’s leading goal-kicking award with 110 goals for the season, eight behind Geelong’s Gary Ablett in the race for the Coleman Medal.

As we all know, Lockett stuck around for another four seasons in the red and white (plus a three-game return in 2002) and provided some well-celebrated moments that will live large in the memory of Swans supporters.

‘Plugga’ finished with an incredible total of 1360 goals – an AFL record which many argue will stand the test of time.

Lockett’s 1300th stands out above the rest, obviously due to the fact it was the record, it happened against Collingwood and it triggered arguably the biggest ground invasions ever seen.

Others include one of the most celebrated behinds in the competition’s history.

Lockett marked outside 50 and, with the final siren sounding, lined up for goal with the weight of the Sydney Swans’ maiden Grand Final appearance on his shoulders.

The scores were tied so “any score will do” as breathlessly explained by Channel Seven commentator Sandy Roberts.

Lockett’s kick drifted to the left for a behind and the rest is history.
