Mike Pyke says next month’s final series will define the Swans’ entire 2015 campaign.

The ruckman, who played arguably his best game of the year against St Kilda, believes actions during September will account for more than what the Swans hope is a fourth best 16-6 record when the home and away season wraps up this weekend.

Pyke, speaking at the team’s recovery session in Double Bay on Monday, said while three wins from as many weeks have been a morale booster those strong performances will all be for nothing if the Swans can’t build on that form and take that next step.

“Clearly we learnt that last year when we had one of the best seasons in the Club’s history and we fell down at the final hurdle,” Pyke said.

“We just want to give ourselves a chance to be competitive in this last month of football and we’ll do everything in our power to do that.”

The Swans are coming off two big wins but against sides out of finals contention which prompted one journalist to ask whether the Swans can properly measure its form based on those results.

Pyke said across an even competition, in which upsets aplenty have occurred, it was important to tackle the season week by week.

“We’ve seen throughout the season that form can change really quickly,” he said.

“It’s really a week to week proposition. It’s really boring to keep banging that drum but that’s the reality and I think us and every other team are trying to do all they can to be in top form.”

The Swans will need to be in top form with a likely trip to Perth on the cards in the first week of finals.

With Fremantle wrapping up the minor premiership, a win at the SCG on Saturday night will see the Swans locked against the Dockers at Domain Stadium in one of two qualifiers.

Pyke, who hit some reasonable shape himself with two goals from 13 possessions and 15 hit outs on Sunday, sounded out prolific ball winners Dan Hannebery and Josh Kennedy as the men to lead the charge.

Hannebery hit back strongly from a few quiet weeks with 39 disposals at Etihad Stadium while Kennedy continued an unbelievable run of nine consecutive weeks of 30+ possessions.
