Back-to-back clashes on Aspley’s home turf shouldn’t hinder the Swans’ quest for a preliminary final berth, according to NEAFL co-coach Marty Mattner.

Having waited all season to verse the reigning premier, the Swans face a second trip to Brisbane in as many weeks for Saturday’s cut-throat semi-final at Graham Rd Oval.

Last weekend’s clash, as it turned out thanks to Sydney Uni’s upset win over UWS Giants, provided the perfect tune up against the Hornets who clinched a two-point triumph against the Swans in last year’s grand final.

There were plenty of good signs from Round 21 which leads Mattner to believe the Swans are every chance of progressing to another NEAFL preliminary final.

“There are a few things we’ll do the same and a few things we’ll do differently,” Mattner said.

“It is a tough place to play but when we play our best footy we’re as good as any team.

“We’ve won a lot of games on the road this year so it’s a good opportunity to travel again as a team and prepare for a big game.

“We know what they’re like so we just have to bring what we brought in the last quarter and hopefully get away with the win.”

After a tight three quarters, the Swans piled on six unanswered goals to run away with their 12th victory of the season with experienced duo Craig Bird and Ben McGlynn starring.

Both are considered important players but Mattner concedes the duo has higher stakes to play for given AFL finals are just around the corner.

“It’s a bit of a tough situation for those guys to be in,” Mattner added.

“We’ve got to cover two bases in getting guys ready to play senior footy but also provide the opportunity for some of the younger guys to play finals footy at a high level.

“In Benny and Birdy’s case, we’ve got to get some match fitness into them so they’re ready for senior selection.”
