Sydney Swans supporters will have the chance to farewell champion Adam Goodes during the club’s first SCG home match of 2016 against GWS in round three.

The 372-gamer, two-time premiership player and dual Brownlow Medallist will join recently retired ruckman Mike Pyke for the lap of honour around the SCG during half-time.

It will be a fitting farewell for Goodes, having played more games than any sportsperson of any code at the SCG, the club’s spiritual home, and having held the role as SCG Ambassador for the past several years.

After 18 years at the top level, Goodes called an end to his remarkable playing career following the club’s semi-final loss to North Melbourne last season.

Pyke, who only picked up the game as a 25-year-old after forging a successful international rugby career, also hung up his boots at the end of 2015 to pursue opportunities in the corporate sector.

Sydney Swans Chief Executive and Managing Director Andrew Ireland said the lap of honour will be a great opportunity for Swans members and supporters to say farewell.

“I think it’s important Swans fans get the chance to say goodbye to Adam and Adam gets a chance to say goodbye to the fans,” Ireland said.

“The fans have been so supportive of both Adam and Mike throughout their careers and this will give all parties the opportunity to show their feelings".

A champion player and a role model to so many, Goodes finished his career as arguably the greatest Swan of all time.

While his feats on the field will go down in the history books, it’s what he achieved off the field that will be remembered for generations to come.

The former Australian of the Year spent countless hours in the community teaching and nurturing kids from all communities.

Passionate about children’s’ education, Goodes, alongside close friend Michael O’Loughlin, formed the GO Foundation to provide schooling scholarships to Indigenous kids to further their studies.

The GO Foundation now has 17 full time scholarship holders studying at some of New South Wales’ top schools.

Ireland has no doubt that just from a playing perspective, Goodes ranks right up there as one of the greatest players to pull on a red and white guernsey.

“Adam sits comfortably at the top of the list alongside Bobby Skilton,” Ireland told the Daily Telegraph.

“He’s the games record holder at the club and he’s likely to hold that for a long time. There’s another player by the name of Bobby Skilton who has a pretty strong case for the title of the greatest along with the other legends of the club.”
