Dean Towers has made a knack of starting the season on the right foot – literally.

The crafty forward kicked off Saturday’s NAB Challenge opener against Port Adelaide with the Swans’ first goal of the match, converting a nice set-shot to give the home side the perfect start.

What was so impressive about that goal was the timeliness.

Funnily enough the 25-year-old has kicked the Swans’ first goal for the past three years, an interesting stat which was first bought to the No. 22’s attention by a fan last season.

In 2014, against GWS in Canberra, Towers gathered the ball on centre wing before turning around and charging towards goal.

A season later, against Brisbane in Coffs Harbour, Towers kicked accurately from long range.

And on the weekend just gone in Blacktown, Towers was again in the right place at the right time to give the Swans a six-point head start.

Having been starved of opportunities in the past three seasons, Towers’ subsequent three-goal performance against the Power had a more promising feel given the hype around the 25-year-old in 2016.

On the back of a strong pre-season campaign, Towers said impacting the scoreboard early was a great feeling especially in the lead up to the opening round of the regular season.

“I wanted to kick a goal (on Saturday) so to get two goals and a super goal was good, really good,” Towers said.

“(On the super goal) one of the boys said back yourself, you’ve got the wind behind you, so I was happy to take his advice and have a crack at it.

“There’s plenty to improve on, I’ll look at what I need to do and get back to work over the next two weeks.”

The Swans’ have a 13-day break before a second-round NAB Challenge clash against GWS in Drummoyne.
