Sam Reid is a chance to return to the Sydney Swans senior side for Saturday’s clash with the Gold Coast Suns.

The 24-year-old ran out for his first match of the season in the NEAFL on Friday night, playing 80-minutes game time and kicking a goal.

Young gun Tom Papley is also in the mix for this week and will be tested at training, after missing the win over North Melbourne with a hot spot on his shin.

But the Swans will be without veteran defender Ted Richards who has been ruled out for the next fortnight after suffering concussion.

General Manager of Football Tom Harley says the Club takes concussion very seriously.

“Ted’s seen the absolute best specialists we’ve got here in Australia up in North Sydney,” Harley said.

“In consultation with our docs and also the experts it’s been best advice that Ted miss a total of three matches, so that’s this week and next week also.”

The Swans have taken a proactive approach to concussion by having players undergo neurological scans to create a baseline, from which future injuries can be benchmarked.

Richards is among those who have already been scanned, while it’s anticipated the entire playing list will have been scanned by the end of the year.

“It’s been really beneficial to have some really significant data to make comparisons,” Harley said.

“The recent scan didn’t show any significant changes from the baseline, so it’s been a really valuable part of the assessment process for us.”
