Growing up in WA, I started following St Kilda in the VFL back in about 1963 and still had a soft spot for them when I moved to Sydney in 1987.

But when former chairman Richard Colless took over, he convinced everybody living in Sydney that those who loved Aussie Rules needed to get behind the Swans, so I and all my uncommitted friends joined as members.

And thank goodness we did.

What a truly great club the Sydney Swans is; I’m fortunate and proud to be an Ambassador.

The first game I went to was funnily enough, not a Swans game. It was in 1963 – East Fremantle played Claremont at East Fremantle Oval.

East (my team) was near the top of the table while Claremont was struggling to win games. Claremont won by five points, a timely reminder that losing is not fun.

My favourite Swans moment?

No, not Leo (though that was directly in front of me). No, not Plugger’s behind (the one he kicked to put us into the 1996 Grand Final). It was Robbie Ahmat’s dash down the wing in 1998 to kick, as Bruce McAvaney put it, "One of the best ever" goals you'll see.

I’ve never seen anybody’s legs move so fast.

My favourite Swans players?

Brett Kirk, the best leader ever, incredible courage and never lost his cool. I believe I may have given his nickname too when I was calling Swans games on radio and dubbed him as “Captain Kirk” in his earlier games.

Andrew Dunkley and Mark Bayes who were rocks in the darker times. Rod Carter put stoic into the Swans' vocab. Paul Kelly for, well, being Paul Kelly and Wayne “The Moose” Henwood because he used to come and see my band play.

I can't wait for the season!
