The Sydney Swans have made two changes for Saturday night’s round two clash against Collingwood at ANZ Stadium with co-captain Kieren Jack to return and ruckman Tom Derickx set to make his club debut.

Jack will play his first game for the season after being a late withdrawal in round one with a back injury, while Derickx will line up for his third career game and his first in the red and white.

Swans coach John Longmire said Jack was an important inclusion for his team’s engine room.

“It’s good to have Kieren back in the team,” Longmire told SwansTV’s Centrum Team Selection.

“He’s obviously our co-captain and it’s great to have him back in.

“He gives us some real inside run and speed in the centre of the ground and he can play in a number of different positions.”

Lewis Roberts-Thomson, who suffered a groin injury last round, will miss this weekend’s match after failing to pass a fitness test at training on Thursday, while new recruit Jeremy Laidler has been omitted from the side.

With Roberts-Thomson unavailable this week, former Richmond ruckman Derickx has been added to the side to pair with Mike Pyke.
Longmire said Derickx, who arrived in Sydney over the off-season after three years at Punt Road, would add another dimension to the Swans’ ruck stocks against the Pies.

“He’ll play a bit in the ruck and he’ll play a bit forward as well,” he said.

“It’s good to have him in the team to hopefully compete against a pretty strong Collingwood ruck combination.”

The coach said it was the ruckman’s competitive nature that earned him a place in the side this week.

“Tom has just competed really well,” Longmire said.

“He’s just made a real contest at the centre bounce and around the ground at ball-ups and boundary throw-ins and that’s what we’re hoping he does this week.”

Looking ahead to Saturday night’s match, Longmire said Collingwood’s talented midfield would be a challenging area for the Swans to counter especially following round one’s disappointing result against GWS.

“The midfield battle is always an important one,” the coach said.

“When you’ve got (Dane) Swan, (Scott) Pendlebury, (Dayne) Beams, (Steele) Sidebottom and a number of players who run through their midfield, Collingwood have got some stars there.

“We’ve got to make sure that our best players play well on them.”
