This week star players Chloe Molloy and Lucy McEvoy were named co-captains of the 2022 AFLW season.

Hailing from Collingwood and Carlton respectively, the two athletes not only bring experience to Sydney. According to head coach Scott Gowans, he says they bring a hunger for winning.

“They bring that competitive edge,” he told Sydney Swans media.

There’s a level of competitiveness and the absolute want to win, as well as wanting to improve.

With just a month ahead of Round 1 at North Sydney Oval, Gowans has seen huge improvement among existing players too. A reflection not only on the luxury of time, but the injection of these veteran players.

“You’re able to see a big improvement on the GPS numbers and statistics on the existing players,” Gowans added.

“You sit and watch ball moment drills and think, ‘Wow’. The chain of possessions has gone up and the contest work is better, pressure is better.

“It’s just those moments when you think, we’re on the right path now.”

The culture amongst the team is also building in the club’s second AFLW season. Gowans attributes the Sydney Swans housing program and partnership with UNSW for the tight knit group.

“It shows around the club. Even on a day off you can see groups of them coming in and you don’t realise they were so close.”

Stay tuned for our next episode as the head coach reflects on the players to watch and what to expect heading into the Sydney’s second chapter of the AFLW.
