Excitement was in the air as a host of budding footballers took to Lakeside Oval to trial for the 2019 QBE Youth Girls Program this week.

The QBE Sydney Swans Academy is set to welcome its second intake of girls, with footballers trialling for under-12, 13 and 14 squads in 2019.

The Youth Girls Program launched in April as 130 youngsters joined the Club for an initial 12-week elite training program.

Academy head coach Jared Crouch was impressed with the attitude of the girls at this week’s trials.

“You can never underestimate the enthusiasm of the girls,” Crouch told SwansTV.

“They’re fantastic. Anytime I’ve dealt with the girls they’ve brought an enormous amount of energy to the Academy, which is certainly exciting.”

The boys’ Academy launched in 2010 and has played a pivotal role in shaping stars of the AFL, including Isaac Heeney and Callum Mills.

Crouch says it’s great a pathway is now in place for girls.

“For those boys and girls in our zone to get access to really good coaching, and to get access to training with the better players in the zone, helps improve their skill level and improves the standard of football all over NSW,” Crouch said.

“So it’s certainly great for football here.”
