Harry Kyle excelled to new heights throughout his debut season; the QBE Sydney Swans Academy graduate made his debut and featured 12 times for Sydney throughout the 2026 season.
Though the season that Harry long dreamed of almost never was, as the 19-year-old revealed, he only got his opportunity in the academy via a lone email message that was thankfully picked up and eventually led to the rising star's breakout season.
“I don't think I've told anyone this yet [but] me and my mate were in the library one day, and he got a message from one of the academy people inviting him to go to Benchmark, which is pre-season. It just felt like a little thing, and that sort of made me go, I sort of want to be invited to that as well,” Kyle said.
“So I sort of did a bit of ruffling around and eventually sent an email to the academy and I was lucky enough to get a four-week trial period with them.”
It has been a fast and frantic four months for Kyle, who has gone from playing VFL matches in front of a couple hundred fans, to playing in front of 40,000 inside a sold-out SCG, to a home Preliminary Final and to Swans fans asking him for his autograph and aspiring to be the next Harry Kyle.
“It has definitely hit me, but I reckon it hit my mum a bit more,” Kyle said.
“Just seeing myself getting asked to sign a few jerseys and whatnot. I get asked to sign many, but my mum finds it pretty cool. I find it pretty cool as well that people want my signature.
Making his debut in Round 12 against Richmond, Kyle averaged 11.6 disposals, 6.3 handballs and 1.8 tackles. No tackle was bigger than Kyle’s tackle on Brisbane’s three-time premiership winner Kai Lohmann in the Qualifying Final.
“Yeah, it was amazing,” Kyle said.
“It's always something that you sort of dream of in game, like you produce a play that all the crowd love and get around.”
With 2026 delivering everything Kyle could have asked for and more, the defender will take the lessons he has learnt throughout the season into 2027, where he hopes to continue his growth and impact within the playing group.
“To come in and for people to say that I would have played one game, I would have been very happy, but to play 12, it's more than what I could have asked for, so I'm pretty happy with how it went,” Kyle said.
