Jarrad McVeigh’s transition from playing into the coaching ranks has been as smooth as expected.

McVeigh finished his 325 game career last season deciding to hang up the boots after 17 seasons in the red and white as a player.

Senior coach John Longmire could not be more impressed with how the 34-year-old has taken to his new assistant coaching role looking after the midfield group.

“He has integrated into the program as I thought, he has jumped straight into it,” Longmire said.

“When you have been a captain and leader of this club for such a long time you do become a bit broader in your knowledge of other things other than just playing.

“I was always confident that he had that experience.”

Having a player step straight out of the game and into the coaches box is not something new for the Swans after Steve Johnson joined the coaching panel two seasons ago following his retirement from AFL.

“I am certainly keen to have coaches that are not long out of the game,” Longmire said.

“He just knows the game, we haven’t got right into the stoppage and hard work midfield training that we will in January and February.

“Having Macca come straight into that coaching role with fresh, hands on experience as a player is extremely valuable.

“I have found it great from the coaches perspective in how we look at the game and also his relationship with the players.”
