Today, May 26, marks National Sorry Day. It’s a day that acknowledges the mistreatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who were forcibly removed from their families as part of the Stolen Generations.

On May 26, 1997, the landmark Bringing Them Home report was tabled in federal parliament. It was the final report from the National Inquiry into the Separation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Children from Their Families.

One year later, National Sorry Day was first held to commemorate the anniversary of the report and pay tribute to the strength, struggles and hardships endured by thousands of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. It has been observed ever since.

The Sydney Swans would like to take this day to pay tribute to those who found the strength to tell their stories, and to all of those whose stories and suffering remain untold.
