Yesterday my uncle Byron Sumner, our older brother Goodesy and I went out to Glebe youth school, where they teach and educate young Indigenous and help them to complete school and make a positive life for themselves.
As we entered the school we had a brief chat with the teachers about some of the students, because they were not sure if we had been involved with young men and women like some of the students there.
But in fact we are very similar to the students there. We have all grown up struggling and our families have done it hard from the very start and this is where we had our connection with students.
We introduced ourselves and all told our stories to the students to create an understanding of each other and also a comfortable relationship with the students and staff there.
Adam spoke first and told the students where he grew up and how he became an AFL player, and also Byron and myself spoke about our up bringing and some of the struggles and hard times we’ve faced at their age and how we overcome the hard times and remained positive through all the problems we’ve faced.
We could see that our stories had made an impact on the youngsters lives. We spoke about many different things and problems that they may face in their life and how they might overcome problems.
After our stories we had photos and also played some basketball with the boys and had some great fun and laughs.
Apricot jam chicken
Later that night myself and Byron decided to have a crack at making apricot chicken for dinner. On the way home we had stopped at Coles to buy the stuff for dinner.
Once we got home we started cooking. First we grabbed a pot for the chicken then smashed the drumsticks in the pot and let the chicken boil.
Twenty minutes later we got the drumsticks out and into the frying pan. Now to start making the sauce … first we put the sachet in to a small pot of water and soon realised we didn’t have any apricot halves hahahaha, so Byron thought he would bring out his magic in cooking and instead of using apricot halves we decided to use apricot JAM lol, weird method but we pulled it off and it was tasty and filling. Now we are just waiting on each other to see if we turn green or sick up all day … so far no signs of food poisoning.
