Tonight’s Marn Grook at the SCG, as part of Sir Doug Nicholls Round, celebrates Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander's culture and contribution to our game.
Along with Sydney players donning a new Marn Grook guernsey design this year, designed by GO Foundation scholar, artist Lua Pellegrini, Swans forward Lance Franklin will also wear custom boots designed and painted by Daren Dunn and his son Koorianni.
Dunn is a proud Gamilaroi man from NSW and was awarded the 2015 NAIDOC artist of the year.
'I painted the boots to represent “men's business”. Men’s business is our business. Men have an important role to play with and for our people. We lead with our women, families, mob and community. We all play our part,” Dunn said of his artwork.
“I also painted the boots to celebrate and honour the role that Buddy plays leading and inspiring our people and nation."
Marn Grook celebrations on Friday night will also acknowledge the 30th anniversary of the Mabo decision and acknowledge the legacy of this decision and the efforts of the late Eddie ‘Koiki’ Mabo and this is referenced in the boot design.
“White, yellow and red ochres represent the lands where we draw connections. The green, white and blue honour the Torres Strait Islands and the 30th year anniversary of the Mabo decision," Dunn said.
“There are 3 figures seated together, representing our people standing beside us. Aboriginal people of the past, present and future.”
