Sydney Swans forward Lance Franklin has been honoured in the 2022 NAIDOC Week Awards, being named National NAIDOC Sportsperson of the year.

More than 1400 people attended the gala dinner in Melbourne on Saturday night, which kicked off national NAIDOC Week celebrations.

There were 10 awards presented in total, with tennis star Ash Barty and actor Uncle Jack Charles among the other recipients.

Franklin said he felt proud to be recognised with the award.

"This award means so much to me, not only me but my family and everyone who has been on the journey with me so far, so thank you to everyone who voted for me as it means the world to me," Franklin said.

"I also want to say well done to the other award winners. It's so great to see Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders doing so well in their field, so congratulations to everyone."
