“IT was the best of times, it was the worst of times.”

Never before would I thought that I’d open with a bit of Dickens in one of these reports, but after the game on the weekend this line was very much appropriate for my mate, “Chit Chat” Hannebery.

The best of Times…
Dan played a great game on the weekend with 38 possessions! Subiaco is a massive oval, and his work rate in both attack and defence was sensational.

Despite his young age and experience he stood up when the pressure was on in the last quarter and he helped us win the game.

I’m sure it was evident to those who watched on tv, but when the final siren sounded we were ecstatic! Apart from the small contingent of passionate Swans fans, the crowd fell deathly silent.

We all ran in together to celebrate and there were plenty of man hugs going on. We were all so excited and I’m pretty sure at some stage in the celebrations Tadhg caught me off guard and slipped me a kiss on the head!

The worst of Times…
After the game we went back to the hotel for our post game meal. We had quite a few hours to kill before our flight home that night so Jesse White and I looked for ways to entertain ourselves.

We had a buffet dinner set out for us, and amongst other things fish was on offer for mains and sticky date pudding for dessert.

Accompanying the fish at one end of the buffet was a small jug of béarnaise sauce and accompanying the pudding at the other end of the buffet was a small jug of caramel sauce.

Jesse and I saw an opportunity. Whilst no one was watching Jesse and I grabbed the béarnaise sauce, carefully positioned it next to the caramel sauce, and then sat and watched and waited to see who’d fall for our “custard” on their dessert.

Most people were dubious to try the weird looking custard. Perhaps we over did it, but Jesse and I insisted to some of the guys that it was some of the best custard we had ever had.

Some people were close to pouring some, but smelt it and quickly put it back. Up steps Hannez. Set a trap, catch a rabbit!

Hannez poured himself a well earned generous portion of béarnaise sauce all over the pudding.  Jesse and I were in stitches as he sat down and tucked into it.

After hearing Jesse and I laughing out loud, and finally registering the custard may not have been what it claimed to be, Hannez put 2 and 2 together and worked it out!

It was not just the best of times and the worst of times for Dan on the weekend.

Ben McGlynn was on fire against Fremantle in the first three quarters, and I feel so sorry for him that he’s now got a fractured cheekbone.

My thoughts go out to Benny McGlynn, who starts his journey home from Perth in a few days. Last year I had to get the train home from Melbourne after I was injured in a game, and I can only sympathise with him for the massive journey in front of him. Hopefully it’s not the last game he plays this season.
