Sydney Swans coach John Longmire is faced with the near-impossible challenge of replacing Swans co-captain and dual Brownlow medallist Adam Goodes ahead of the club’s round four clash with North Melbourne.

Tony Armstrong, Harry Cunningham, Mark Seaby and Tommy Walsh are all in contention to replace Goodes - who will miss one week through suspension - after being included in the 25-man squad for Sunday’s game against the Kangaroos.

Swans coach John Longmire said it would be difficult to fill the void Goodes’ suspension has left in this week’s side.

“Goodes can be a key forward for you, he can be a crumbing forward and he can be a midfielder, so he obviously gives enormous flexibility to the team,” Longmire told sydneyswans.com.au.

“With him being out we just want to make sure we have the flexibility in the team to cover a couple of different roles.”

Longmire said Cunningham is one of the players in the mix to be named in the Swans’ final team.

He said Cunningham’s pace could be a valuable asset against North Melbourne’s quick midfield.

“Harry’s already played a senior game for us, so we know he can give us some real run,” he said.

“We know North Melbourne has some genuine pace in their team now, they were really quick last week, so with that in mind, if we think we need to look at putting Harry in we will.”

Longmire said sleek defender Tony Armstrong and key position player Tommy Walsh were being also in the mix to make their Swans debut.

“Armstrong got another game under his belt and he’s played a number of games now and has a really good level of fitness, so that’s why he’s coming into the extended squad,” he said.

“Tommy has been consistent the last three weeks. He’s played forward and back for us, so he’s played a few roles and he’s done pretty well.

“He’s kicked goals up forward and was also able to play on ex-Adelaide player Kenny McGregor last week down back, so he gives us that key position option.”

Mark Seaby battled manfully against Fremantle’s Aaron Sandilands in the seniors’ last game at the SCG and travelled with the team last week as a non-playing emergency for the win over Port Adelaide.

Longmire said his side needs to be wary of the Kangaroos, who are likely to still be riding on the high of last week’s win over reigning premiers, Geelong.

“North Melbourne are really confident and played really well and were in a dominant position for most of the game last week against Geelong,” he said.

“Their midfield kicked 10 goals between them, which is a really good effort.

“They’ve taken the number one marks inside forward 50 so far this year, so they’ve got plenty of options and are a dangerous team.”
