With high-rise office towers dominating its skyline, you could be forgiven for thinking North Sydney is simply an extension of the CBD. But delve just a little further into this enclave and there is not only plenty to do – you will also find it’s home to some of the world’s most stunning views.

The Sydney Swans AFLW team will make North Sydney home for the opening two rounds of this season, so we’re taking a closer look at some of the highlights that the north side of the bridge has to offer.

1. That view

Whether it’s a picnic at Milson’s Point or watching the new year’s fireworks from North Sydney Oval, you won’t be hard pressed to find a spectacular view. One of the best ways to take it in is through one of the area’s many walking trails – such as the Cremorne Point Walk, which takes you through Cremorne Reserve, past the MacCallum Pool and to Robertson’s Point Lighthouse.

2.  North Sydney Olympic Pool

Speaking of the view, you can take it in and go for a dip at the same time at the North Sydney Olympic Pool. The pool was first opened in 1936 to host the British Empire Games in 1938. While the pool has been closed for renovation since the start of 2021 it’s expected to reopen later this year.

3. The Greens

If you’re looking for a family friendly venue for an afternoon in the sun, then look no further than The Greens. A short drop punt from North Sydney Oval, The Greens is a lawn bowls club that offers a variety of entertainment and serves up modern fare, from the classic burger to a kid’s menu or a four-course banquet.

4. Blues Point Road food

When it comes to dining, North Sydney isn’t short on options. While there are plenty of pubs, restaurants and cafes dotted across the area, you can’t go wrong if you head to Blues Point Road, where you will find a cluster of options that always deliver.

5. St Leonards Park

If a picnic blanket with plenty of open space is more your vibe, then St Leonards Park is a terrific option. Adjacent North Sydney Oval, St Leonard’s Park boasts a high ‘eagle’s nest’ climbing frame as part of a newly refurbished playground, which was opened earlier this year. There are two distinct playground areas, one for children aged 12 and up, while the other for littlies offers a quadruple swing set, sandpit with interactive water equipment and an outdoor music room.

6. Northside Produce Market

Now in its 24th year, the Northside Produce Market operates from 8am-midday on the 1st and 3rd Saturday of every month. Here you will find a range of fresh produce, artisan food, handcrafted goods and plenty of options for breakfast or lunch. Feel free to bring your four-legged friends with dogs on leash welcome.

7. Wendy’s Secret Garden

Hidden in the Lavender Bay Parklands, Wendy’s Secret Garden is an oasis of peace and tranquillity. To find the entrance, look for the huge Moreton Bay fig tree outside the home Wendy shared with her artist husband Brett Whiteley – the home has a distinctive white tower. The garden offers plenty to explore with artefacts and sculptures dotted among a mix of shrubs, natives, exotics and trees that have become home to an array of birdlife.

8. Elite women’s footy – LIVE

This September North Sydney Oval will be home to the Sydney Swans women’s team for the first two rounds of the AFLW. Last year history was made at the venue when the Swans ran out for their first game in the competition before a crowd of more than 8,500 people. This year the Swans take on cross-town rival the GWS Giants in the opening round on Sunday, September 3 at 3:05pm. You can support the team AND access every game this season by becoming a Sydney Swans AFLW member – just $80 for adults and $35 for juniors. We’ll see you in North Sydney!
