Welcome to our new series Behind the BannerTo celebrate 150 years of South Melbourne and the Sydney Swans, banners throughout the 2024 AFL season will be a nod to our long history.

On May 31, 2003 a Swans contingent ran out against Richmond. The banner? "At the 'G', Saturday night, show the Tigers, we're dynamite." It feels fitting to revisit the iconic banner nearly 21 years later in our first MCG match of the season against Collingwood.

Back then Sydney pulled off a strong victory finishing Round 10 with a final score of 16.8.104 to the Tiger's 10.12.72. A goal by Richmond's Joel Bowdon early in the final quarter left Sydney with a one-point lead before a late five goal haul secured the win.

Nick Davis kicked three majors for his side while Barry Hall and Ryan O'Keefe kicked two each.

Sydney ran out with the same banner on Friday night, as the side went on to a secure a 33-point victory over Collingwood.

Chad Warner (three goals, 27 disposals and seven clearances), Isaac Heeney (29 disposals, 13 contested possessions, four clearances and two goals) and James Rowbottom (a game-high 13 tackles, one goal and 16 disposals) starred in the red and white victory over the 2023 Premiers, while young key forward Logan McDonald led the way with four majors.
