Isaac Heeney won the Goodes-O’Loughlin Medal for his best-on-ground performance in the annual Marn Grook match at the SCG on Friday night. The match is a highlight of Sir Doug Nicholls Round, which has reached its 10th year of celebration.
The medal is a tribute to two of the greatest Indigenous footballers to have played the game - Adam Goodes and Michael O’Loughlin. Since its inception in 2016, Heeney has won the medal on three occasions - his previous wins being in 2018 and 2021.
The Swans have played for the Marn Grook Trophy, in a special tribute to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and culture, since 2002. Indicating its significance to the Sydney Swans, the match was added to the Heritage List in the club’s Hall of Fame In 2017.
Additionally, Sir Doug Nicholls, originally from the Cummeragunja mission station near Barmah on the NSW side of the Murray river, was inducted into the inaugural AFL NSW Hall of Fame last year.
Heeney and fellow midfielder Chad Warner inspired the Swans to a last quarter charge in the round 10 game. The silky Swan from Cardiff, had a massive 38 disposals, 9 clearances and kicked two goals helping to lift his team to a 16 point win over Carlton.
Heeney earned the maximum 10 votes in the AFLCA. Every week the two senior coaches for each game award votes on a 5-4-3-2-1 basis, meaning 10 votes is the maximum a player can receive in a round.
The gun Swan has surged to the lead in the Carey-Bunton Medal and is also well positioned on the Bill Mohr Medal goal kicking leaderboard.
