The Sydney Swans’ support for women of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander heritage will be in full swing on Saturday, with the Club set to team up with AFL NSW/ACT at NAIDOC in the City.

This year’s NAIDOC Week theme, ‘Because of her, we can’, will be at the forefront of the celebrations as Sydney unites in honour of the significant impact of women of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent.

Sydney Swans Human Resources Manager Scott Dalby says the influence of Indigenous women on the Club and wider community is invaluable.

“A lot of time football clubs are focused on former players in terms of the great contributions they’ve made from the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community,” Dalby said.

“But this year the emphasis is very much around women and the role they play in those families and in the communities that they’re part of.

“Generally it is the mums that have been the ones to support our players coming to the Sydney Swans. That’s a great contribution to their development as they’ve strived to become the stars of the game that we’ve ended up with.”

Dalby says NAIDOC Week is a highly important event on the Club’s calendar.

“We always invest in key moments in the year and Indigenous Round is clearly a big one but also NAIDOC Week," Dalby said.

“For the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community that aren’t necessarily week-to-week footy fans, NAIDOC Week is a great opportunity for us to engage with them because it’s hugely significant to their community.”

NAIDOC in the City will take place at Hyde Park between 10am and 2pm and the event will be free for all.
