Gowans: "We've completely changed the way we train..."

The Sydney Swans are travelling to Melbourne this week for a clash with Collingwood at Victoria Park. The team are chasing their fifth consecutive win this season after defeating Fremantle at home.

Speaking to the media this week, senior coach Scott Gowans reflected on the squad's strong start to the season.

“It's more to do with the way we train, we've completely changed the way we train, and we're really big on match stimulation. But you just can't do match stimulation, but you can break them down," Gowans explained.

"So the way we move the ball or how we set up the field for our contest shapes everything. That is done with everyone involved, rather than breaking off into different groups. I think that has been an eye opener for me. It's the first time I've ever done it, and it seems to be working really well because what it does do is build connection.”

Off-season injury update

Sydney Swans Head of Physiotherapy and Medical services, Damian Raper has provided an off-season injury update, as several key AFL players were unable to complete the 2025 season.

Senior players, Joel Amartey and Justin McInerney both suffered season-ending injuries late in the 2025 season, with both players to begin rehabilitation programs immediately.

Raper said players have been given time off since the season finished to freshen up and enjoy some time away from the club.

“It has been three weeks since our last game, with players given plenty of downtime,” Raper said.

“Running loads will build from this week onwards, with preseason beginning in a cardiovascular block before progressing into speed through October and then transitioning into more football.
