The Sydney Swans can confirm Will Edwards and Billy Cootee have been selected to make their AFL debuts in Thursday night’s match against the Western Bulldogs at Marvel Stadium.

Edwards, a QBE Sydney Swans Academy athlete, was recruited to the Swans as a Category B Rookie in the 2022 NAB AFL Rookie Draft. He has played 44 VFL games in the red and white largely across half back.

The 22-year-old starred last week in the Swans’ VFL win over the Giants, racking up 21 disposals and pulling down nine marks.

Cootee, a mature age selection from Norwood in the SANFL, was taken with pick 42 in the 2025 Draft. Also 22 years of age, Cootee dominated in his time in the SANFL, winning the Redlegs’ best and fairest last season, having previously captained Essendon’s VFL side.

The small forward kicked three goals in the Swans win over GWS in the VFL last weekend.

Senior coach Dean Cox announced the news to the team on Tuesday afternoon and said he was extremely proud of both Edwards and Cootee for their resilience.

“I don't think anyone can ever question your (Edwards) resilience, perseverance, and toughness to go through what you have,” Cox said.

“It’s a credit to the work you've put in, and I speak on behalf of everyone here, congratulations, you deserve it mate, so well done.

Cox went onto congratulate Cootee for having such a big impact at the club in a short space of time.

“Ever since you got here, you've left no stone unturned, you've had a huge impact on the playing group and all the staff,” Cox said.

"It's a credit to you. You work as hard as anyone, and you've played some really good footy to get this opportunity and you deserve every part of it.

The Sydney Swans will announce their full Round 7 team at 6:20pm AEST on Wednesday.
