Senior coach Dean Cox has made two changes to Sydney's team to run out against North Melbourne on Saturday afternoon.

Hayden McLean will play his first senior game in 2026 after Cox revealed Charlie Curnow would miss Round 9 due to an "abdominal issue" in a Thursday morning press conference. McLean has dominated in the VFL kicking five goals against reigning premiers Footscray Bulldogs, and two goals against the Casey Demons last Sunday.

Speaking to Sydney Swans Media, assistant coach Ben Matthew echoed this.

“Bring the ball to ground, compete in the air, follow up at ground level - that’s what we expect," Matthews shared.

"(McLean will) be able to do that and he’s done that in the past for us. Looking forward to his opportunity. He’s worked really hard at VFL level to get that chance, kicked goals, competed really hard.”

Cox also revealed that Jai Serong would also be sidelined with a tight calf. He is replaced by the experienced Harry Cunningham who is in his 15th season with the Swans.

North Melbourne v Sydney Swans

Round 9

Marvel Stadium, Melbourne • VIC

“He’ll show us exactly what he’s shown previously. His patterns as a high half forward, win, or half back are really strong. He competes as a back man and fills in to give the others a bit of a rest. He plays his role wherever he plays. Harry’s a great inclusion for us and great flexibility," the assistant coach added.

The team will be looking to secure the club's sixth consecutive win this season, but Matthews said it will be a hard-fought contest against the Kangaroos at Marvel Stadium.

"(North Melbourne) are competing really hard around the ball. One of the top contested teams, led by their ruckman Xerri who competes really hard and gets their team going forward. Their mids are strong…so it will be a great battle in the midfield. And they can score. Our backs will have a big job.”

Our Round 9 match will take place from 1:15pm AEST on Saturday, May 9 at Marvel Stadium. Members and fans who can't make it to the match can watch the game on Kayo and Fox Footy from 1pm, and on delayed basis via 7mate and 7plus from 3pm.
