Here’s some good news for Swans fans - Dan Hannebery believes he is not yet back to his best.

It might not sound like something to get excited about, but if last weekend’s 36-possession haul isn’t the 21-year-old’s best football then Swans fans have a lot to look forward to from the talented midfielder.

Hannebery, who battled a shoulder and knee injury over the pre-season, said he still has work to do before he reaches his top form.

“I know I’m not 100 per cent yet, but I think I’m not far away at all,” Hannebery told sydneyswans.com.au.

“I think my last game just shows that my fitness is just about there, but there’s still work to be done.”

Hannebery played an outstanding game against Port Adelaide, notching up 15 kicks and 21 handballs to be the leading possession getter for the match.

Hannebery said his slow build up from the pre-season to the regular season was the perfect preparation to develop his match fitness.

“The first week playing GWS I was probably a little bit underdone because I’d only had half a game or 60 minutes before that,” he said.

“I was able to get a few more hard-ball gets against Freo, where I started as a sub.

“It was probably an ideal preparation going into the Port game. I was starting to get my running legs back and my legs are feeling good.

“I just basically went in with the attitude to play the role that I was given and made sure I was working hard and I think I was just lucky I got on the end of a few.”

Hannebery is not the only young-gun in the Swans midfield that is firing early this season, with Josh Kennedy and Luke Parker also collecting plenty of the footy over the first three rounds.

Hannebery said the midfield group is growing in confidence and is confident they are capable of matching it with the best in the competition.

“Now that most of the guys in our midfield are fit and firing I think that everyone now realises that we’ve got a really good balance in our midfield with some good inside players and good outside players,” he said.

“I think we’re really confident that if we’re switched on on the day and trained well as a group then we can beat any midfield match-up.

“We’re really confident that if we can work as a group then anything can happen, and so far we’ve had a good start to the season so we’re just hoping that can continue.”

He added that this week’s match with North Melbourne was shaping up as an important test for the group, following the Kangaroos impressive win over Geelong last weekend.

“They are obviously running very well and running in numbers and they’ve also got that good mix of inside-outside midfielders, so they’ve got guys who can win the footy as well as guys who can run on the outside,” Hannebery said.

“They have a really good balance there, so we really need to be able to match them inside as well as match them outside.

“It’s going to be a really important week for us at training to make sure we get our stuff right and come ready for a fierce contest on Sunday.”
