Sydney Swans midfielder James Rowbottom spoke to the media on Friday, ahead of the side's Qualifying Final against Brisbane.

On the excitement of playing finals

"Yeah, it's really high, especially I think watching the game last night. You realise the intensity goes up a notch and the pressure and the tackling, which I enjoy, is at the forefront. So we're really going to lean into that and look forward to it."

On the group's desire to win

"We finished second for a reason. We said at the start of the year it's going to take a whole squad mentality. We've had a lot of boys come in and out of the side throughout the whole year and really played their role. I think last week was no better an example of everyone that came in and really played their role. As I said, finals is a different beast, so if everyone can come in and be tough and fast, we'll be alright."

On playing without some key players

"Well, as I said, we're a system-based team and people step in and play their role. No one needs to be the superstar in a finals game. It's a team effort and if everyone can execute their role. I think, especially in finals, it's a lot more defensive and a lot less flow on the ball throughout a game. As we saw last night, it was the Hawks' backs that really stood up and limited Freo's scoring throughout the whole game. So I think everyone that stepped in really has a defensive mindset and we'll put that to the forefront."

On the support of members and fans

"Yeah, it's been amazing. The support of the Swans Faithful has been unwavering. If we can get a sellout tomorrow, it would be amazing to run out and hear Sydney chant go around the stadium again.  It would be really, really, really exciting back at finals footy at the SCG and we're really looking forward to it."

On the mood of the playing group

"Yeah, obviously it was a really emotional period for not only the playing group but the club in general. As you said, now we've had a game under our belts and a week of training. We're really looking forward to finals footy. Those events have happened and we've got to focus on what's to come and that's the qualifying final tomorrow night. We're all really, really looking forward to it."

On the underdog tag

"Yeah, it's interesting. Up in Sydney, you don't really hear too much about that sort of commentary. But I think being, if you are to be an underdog in any situation, it's not a bad thing. I don't think we still, as I said, have a lot of belief in who's going out there tomorrow and yeah, it's a full belief that we can get done. We've finished second and we've earned the right for two home finals. We have full belief that we can win tomorrow and then get a home prelim. As you said, if people want to write us off, they're more than welcome to do that."

On the evolution of his own role

"For me personally, I just do what the team needs. And I sort of have done that for the last eight years or so. My role's been ever-changing this year. I've played a lot of half-forward, a lot of midfield, a bit of wing. Week to week, it changes for me personally. So if you had to set a month ago, I'd broke my hands. So I wouldn't have put that on the schedule either. Yeah, football's ever-changing and I'm happy to take it as it comes."

On the unity with the AFLW team

"Our club has been a massive one-club mentality through the inception of the AFLW side here. I think in a funny way it's almost brought us two playing groups closer. We've really rallied together and the two cohorts, more broadly speaking, have really got around each other. I think last week against North and Essendon respectively was a really good example of us getting together. Obviously getting two wins helps that as well."

The Swans take on Brisbane at 3.15pm on Saturday afternoon at the SCG.
