Sydney Swans AFLW captain Lucy McEvoy is set to play career game number 75 when Sydney takes on Brisbane this weekend. She joins a growing list of Swans to reach the career milestone in the past few weeks.
The 25-year-old midfielder will join fellow teammates Chloe Molloy and Jas Grierson, who achieved the feat last weekend against Port Adelaide. McEvoy, who has become an integral part of the women’s program at the Swans for many years now, is proud to be marking another milestone in the red and white guernsey.
“Having a 75-game milestone coming up is obviously a really big achievement for myself, and you don't often reflect on it,” McEvoy said.
“It's nice to sort of have that moment to appreciate what you've had, and at two clubs in Sydney and Carlton, I've been very lucky to be at two great clubs that have such rich history.”
Initially drafted by Carlton as pick No.2 in the 2019 NAB AFL Women’s Draft, McEvoy was described as a natural leader and one of the clear standouts of the draft pool that year.
After playing 33 games at Carlton, McEvoy landed at the Swans at the end of the 2022 season via the AFLW’s Priority Signing Period. McEvoy was announced as co-captain of the Swans AFLW side in July 2023, alongside Chloe Molloy.
McEvoy has since gone on to play over 41 games over four seasons for the Swans, with the leadership and composure hallmarks of her game. She has averaged 14 disposals and 186 metres gained throughout her career.
“The thing I've loved the most about my time at the Swans is probably the people that I've met,” McEvoy said.
“The Swans is such a great place and with so many great people across all different departments, not just in our AFLW program and that's been the best part about it.”
“I get to come into the headquarters every day and chat to different people and just show an interest in them and take what I can from them in terms of life lessons and just in general conversation day-to-day, and it's an awesome place to come to work.”
The 2026 campaign has gotten off to a great start for McEvoy. At the start of the season, McEvoy was elected by her peers to lead as sole captain ahead of the upcoming season and put pen to paper on a new five-year contract at the end of July to keep her at the red and white until the end of 2031.
As much as this is an individual achievement, McEvoy is appreciative the many people that have made an impact on her career, as she now goes in search of the next milestone.
“There's been a few people that have probably helped me since I've come to the Swans,” McEvoy said.
“Obviously, teammates are always pushing you to try and be better. Mon Ham is one in particular that I sort of clicked with straight away and we've kind of become best mates.”
“I've been able to take so much from that and use that in my career, and hopefully can play another 75 games off the back of that.”
