Lexi Hamilton will notch up game number 50 of her AFLW career this coming weekend when the Sydney Swans return home to face Carlton at Henson Park this Sunday afternoon.
Lexi’s milestone game continues the celebration in the Hamilton family after her younger sister Cynthia played her 50th game last weekend against North Melbourne.
“[It] is something special, and that's probably even more special to my parents, but to be able to have been there for every one of Cynthia's games so far has been super exciting,” Hamilton said.
“I've loved seeing her grow as a young woman, as a person, as a sibling, as a friend, and now into my vice-captain, which is crazy to say about my little sister. But to have the opportunity to watch her grow in this space has been super exciting as both a footballer and a person.”
Hamilton began her career with Gold Coast after she was drafted by the Suns with their third selection and thirty-eighth overall in the 2019 AFL Women's draft. Hamilton made her debut against the Giants in Round one of the 2020 season.
The COVID-19 pandemic put a hold on the defender’s young career who was delisted by the Suns during the pandemic before moving back home to Canberra.
Hamilton returned to the AFLW in 2022, featuring twice for North Melbourne before moving to Sydney and joining her sister as members of the inaugural Sydney AFLW squad.
“I think the possibility of even playing 50 games was probably not something that was on my horizon when I first started playing AFLW,” Hamilton said.
“My parents and my siblings and all my family have probably seen the backside of that and what it's kind of taken to get here. So, to be in the conversation of 50 games is something special.”
Hamilton has featured 46 times for the Swans, including the program's first finals campaign. The defender has registered a career average of 7.7 disposals and 3.1 tackles.
The 25-year-old is excited about getting to celebrate her milestone game in front of the red and white supporters and the ground she has come to adore.
“I think Henson has got to be probably the top-tier place that I love to play at,” Hamilton said.
“The community, the atmosphere that they just create there, anyone is welcome at the footy, and Henson really sort of encapsulates that, which is everyone comes down.
“I think even at the end of the day, even if you go for the other team, the atmosphere there is just so feisty, but in a very friendly manner, and it just creates this really awesome atmosphere where we just build off that energy, and it just creates an awesome game of football.”
