Sydney Swans forward Will Hayward will miss Friday night's clash against Melbourne at the MCG after being ruled out with a foot injury.

Hayward failed to train during the week after suffering the injury against Essendon in last Friday night's dramatic win at the SCG.

The 18-year-old has been a shining light in his first season of AFL football booting 13 goals from his first 12 games.

Coach John Longmire said it would be a wait and see prospect as to when Hayward was ready to return from injury.

"His foot pulled up sore after the game and being a young player it was a bit risky to push him this week."

"Unfortunately he misses this week as he has been really good for us this year but we will see how he pulls up next week."

In more positive news veteran Jarrad McVeigh is set to play his first match since Round 8 against North Melbourne.
