Splitting the sticks and running.

Those are the elements of Zac Foot’s game the Sydney Swans youngster is determined to hone in his bid to hit the AFL stage next season.

“Playing through a wing and half-forward you’ve got to be versatile with the way you play your footy,” Foot told SwansTV.

“When you go down forward you have to impact on the scoreboard and then when you’re on the wing you have to focus on running both ways. I think those are both parts of my game I’d like to improve.”

Nick Blakey, Justin McInerney and James Rowbottom all made their AFL debuts in 2019, and while Foot didn’t join his fellow first-year draftees in reaching the big time this year, the Dandenong Stingrays product carved out an impressive NEAFL campaign.

The 18-year-old gathered an average of 17 touches per match and booted a total of 15 goals, some of which lit up the highlights reel.

Foot sealed victory with a stellar goal against the Northern Territory Thunder in Round 14, latching on to the footy on the left wing, taking three bounces and slotting a six-pointer to extend Sydney’s lead to 14 points late in the final term.

The speedy Swan said his first season in red and white was a rewarding experience.

“It’s been a really good experience for me,” Foot said.

“I learned a lot over the year and we have a really good group of boys to help you learn.

“It was pretty disappointing that we got to a NEAFL preliminary final and lost, but for me it’s about focusing on playing consistent footy.”
