A total of 16 Sydney Swans players are set to be in the running for the 2020 AFL Rising Star award.

The AFL Rising Star award was established in 1993 to recognise and encourage talented young players in the league.

One player is nominated at the completion of every home-and-away round and a panel of experts selects the winner at the end of the season.

The winner must be under the age of 21 at January 1 of that year, must not have played more than 10 senior games by the start of the season and must not have been suspended by the AFL or state-league tribunals during the season.

In 2007, the Rising Star award was named in memory of former AFL Commission chairman Ron Evans, and the winner has since received the Ron Evans Medal.

Nathan Buckley won the inaugural AFL Rising Star award in 1993 and three Swans have claimed the honour: Adam Goodes in 1999, Dan Hannebery in 2010 and Callum Mills in 2016.
