The first day of summer marked the first full pre-season session for the Sydney Swans, with the entire senior squad back on the park on Monday.

On bright and sunny morning at Lakeside Oval, the squad kicked off their 2015 campaign with a three-kilometre time trial, which was won for a second time this pre-season by new draftee Jack Hiscox.

Hot on his heels in this morning’s run was Dan Hannebery, who returned to the club in top from, while Lloyd Perris and Dane Rampe continued to impress and closed out the top four.

Young guns Dan Robinson, Luke Parker and Harry Cunningham all registered top ten finishes, while Harry Marsh and Jake Lloyd also finished strongly.

Speaking to media after this morning’s session, co-captain Jack, who last week represented Australian in the International Rules Series, said he was impressed with the form of his young team mates this pre-season.

“We’ve got a very professional group and they work hard,” he said.

“Our young blokes have been flying on the track over the last two weeks.

“Dan Hannebery ran close to a PB in the three kilometre time trial just before, and I expect blokes like that to take it to another level heading into next year.”

While senior players including Adam Goodes, Lance Franklin, Kurt Tippett, Sam Reid, Ben McGlynn and co-captains Kieren Jack and Jarrad McVeigh did not run the three kilometre time trial this morning, the majority of the group took part in a variety of running, boxing and skills sessions.

Jack said it was a positive to see so many senior players on the track on day one of pre-season, and added that the club was fortunate not to be battling many injury concerns.

“It’s huge, it’s positive and any club with tell you that,” he said.

“At the moment, most of the boys are on the track, which just means that you can get more work into them and you can work on some game plan things.

“We’ve got a long time before round one, but in saying that it creeps up pretty quick, so we’ve got to get the work in now and try and get some improvements there.”

In particular, Jack said it was a thrill to see Goodes, who is set to enter his 17th AFL season in 2015, fit and firing on day one.

“He’s a legend,” the co-captain said.

“There isn’t a player in the game who’s done what he’s done.

“He’s someone that I can learn from and he’s someone that everyone can learn from and he makes you walk taller walking out on the field.

“To have him for another year will be great and hopefully he can go through injury free.”

Jack said the club was determined to make the most of the next three weeks of training before Christmas, before stepping up the intensity in the New Year.

“They’re hungry and the boys are excited to be back,” he said.

“Everybody loves playing footy, so it’s good to be back out on the track and not at home catching up with friends, so it’s a welcome change for some.

“(John Longmire) just highlighted the need to improve and making sure that we attack every session.

“We’ve got some things to work on over the break and we started today.”
