Bio

Having played 130 games for Melbourne from 1979 to 1985, Gerard’s career at the Sydney Swans spanned the years 1986 to 1990, during which time he played 81 games in the red and white. Club Champion in 1986, 1987 and 1988, he also achieved All-Australian selection in each of those years, and was the 1988 Brownlow Medalist. 1988 also saw Gerard win the AFL Players’ Association’s Most Valuable Player award. Unfortunately, his highly decorated career was cut short due to a serious wrist injury, and Gerard retired at the conclusion of the 1990 season. Gerard was named on a half-forward flank in the Swans Team of the Century, and was inducted into the Australian Football Hall of Fame in 2000.
